Deepthi Jeevanji Overcomes Adversity to Win Bronze at Paris Paralympics 2024

India Secures 16th Medal at the Paralympic Games

In a remarkable display of determination and resilience, Deepthi Jeevanji, a para-athlete from the village of Kalleda in Warangal district, Andhra Pradesh, secured a bronze medal in the women’s 400m T20 final at the Paris Paralympics 2024. This achievement marks the 16th medal for India at the ongoing Paralympic Games.

Deepthi, who completed the race in an impressive 55.82 seconds, has not only brought glory to her country but has also become an inspiration for many. Her journey to success was fraught with challenges, but she never gave up. Previously, Deepthi made headlines by winning India’s first gold medal at the World Athletics Para Championship held in Kobe, Japan.

Deepthi was born with an intellectual disability, a condition that affected her communication and adaptive skills. Despite these challenges, she showed exceptional promise from a young age. Her parents, Jeevanji Yadhagiri and Jeevanji Dhanalaxmi, recalled the hardships she faced growing up. Born during a solar eclipse with a small head and unusual facial features, Deepthi was often taunted by fellow villagers and even some relatives, who cruelly nicknamed her “pichi” (mental) and “kothi” (monkey). Many suggested that she be sent to an orphanage.

However, her parents stood by her side, nurturing her talents and providing her with the support she needed. “Today, seeing her become the world champion in a far-off country proves that she is indeed a special girl,” her mother, Dhanalaxmi, said in an emotional interview.

The family faced significant financial difficulties, particularly after selling their farm following the death of Deepthi’s grandfather. Yadhagiri, who earned a meager daily wage, and Dhanalaxmi worked hard to make ends meet, all while raising Deepthi and her younger sister, Amulya. Despite the adversity, Deepthi’s calm demeanor and perseverance shone through, leading her to this incredible achievement.

As the news of her bronze medal reached her family, Yadhagiri expressed his pride, stating, “Even though it’s a big day for all of us, I could not afford to miss work. But the whole day, I was thinking about Deepthi winning a medal in Paris. She has always given us joy, and this medal means the world to us.”

Deepthi Jeevanji’s story is a powerful reminder that with determination and support, any obstacle can be overcome. Her achievements at the Paris Paralympics will inspire generations to come.
