Chicago, Illinois – U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election, stepping into the race to challenge Republican rival Donald Trump. Harris, who is of Indian origin, became the Democratic candidate after President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from the race last month.
In her acceptance speech at Chicago’s United Center during the final day of the four-day Democratic National Convention, the 59-year-old Harris pledged to be the “president who unites” Americans and vowed to “fight for America’s future.”
“On behalf of every American, regardless of party, race, gender, or the language your grandmother speaks, on behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on earth, I accept your nomination for President of the United States of America,” Harris declared to an audience that erupted in cheers.
Harris emphasized the significance of this election, stating, “With this election, our nation has a precious and fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a New Way Forward, not as members of any one party or faction but as Americans.”
If successful, Kamala Harris would make history as the first woman elected President of the United States.
