As anticipation builds for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul has spoken out about the approach of IPL franchise owners towards player selection. In a recent podcast with Nitin Kamath, Rahul shared his views on the increasing reliance on data-driven decision-making by owners, who often come from business backgrounds.
Rahul, who faced a challenging IPL 2024 season both as a batter and as a captain, acknowledged the importance of data but cautioned that it doesn’t guarantee success in the unpredictable world of sports. “Owners coming from business backgrounds in IPL, they do research and pick the team but it doesn’t guarantee that you will win every game. You might get the best player based on data, but they might have a horrible year. Every player can have a bad day in sports. There’s nothing in sport that guarantees success. There’s no formula that can get you success,” Rahul explained during the podcast.
His remarks come at a time when speculation is rife about his future with LSG, including the possibility of his exit as the team’s captain. Rahul’s performance in the IPL 2024 season, combined with his recent exclusion from Team India’s T20I plans, has fueled discussions about potential changes within the team.
During the same podcast, Rahul also reflected on the impact of the controversial “Koffee With Karan” episode, in which he appeared alongside Hardik Pandya. The fallout from the episode led to his suspension from the Indian team, an experience that Rahul described as life-changing.
“The interview was a different world altogether. That changed me. I was a very shy, soft-spoken boy growing up. And then I played for India, and for the next three to four years, I became very confident. I had no problem being in a huge group of people. People would know I have been in a room with 100 people because I would talk to everyone,” Rahul shared.
He added, “Now I do not, because the interview scarred me massively. Getting suspended from the team… I have never been suspended in school, never been punished. It just never happened, so I didn’t know how to handle it.”
Rahul’s comments provide insight into the pressures faced by professional athletes and the evolving dynamics of team management in the IPL.
